And then NYC kicked us out.....

This morning sucked. I am going to go out of chrongical order for this post, because I kinda need to vent about this event. The first motel we stayed at was very very cheap for the location/apperance. Jason spent 117 and we had a nice bed and a nice shower. This was all we really wanted. Sadly we did not document this motel, because we were forgetful. All we have to show for the good times is this pen:

Now. We had to swtich motels, because we coudn't get the same expedia deal that we got for the previous night. The motel normally costs about 200 a night. We can't afford that. So we began the internet search... we found a motel two blocks down for 92 bucks. It seemed like a great deal. We pounced on it. We walk there and check in. Basically... I think a lot of young women and their small children actually live in this motel. (which is perfecly fine... I know know as well as anybody... that people gotta do what they gotta do to survive), but they had a problem with me. Before this trip I had tried very hard to pack clothing items that would  make me seem improvished. I think I failed. They were constantly glaring at my attire, at my hair, at my shoes, at my phone. It was bad. Jason and I both ahad the same idea to get to our room as fast as possible. Our room was on the 11th floor. We had to take the elevator. There was no avoiding it. First.. there's only one elevator in the entire motel and second... there's a procedure for making it work. You have to get on one person at a time and you have to wait five seconds inbetween people. Also there has to be a security guard in the elevator at all times. We had to get in and out of the elevator about 4 or 5 times because it would actually work. We arrive in our room. It's pretty simple. It obviously isn't the same quality as the previous motel, but we really don't care. Except the bed felt like cardboard. That is my only real complainit. Here are some pictures of our room below. Anyway. We try and stay very low key. We go to bed at a decent time, because we are supposed to wake up early and catch a bus to D.C.
Our alarm goes off at 6am. We ignore it. The next thing I remember is someone BANGING on our door. LITERALLY BAGGING. I thought someone was trying to kill us. I run into the bathroom. I have no idea what's going on. Jason answers the door and they attedents scream at us that we are to be out of the door in 15 minutes. This is crazy. We needed to shower, because we honestly don't know the next time that we will be able to. We need to brush our teeth. We need to pee. We can't do any of those things because we literally have 15 minutes to leave. Our bags are difficult to pack. We have to distribute the weight very carefully, because we carry them on our backs for extended periods of time. We put all of energy into getting out bags packed. We didn't even have time to look up the bus schedule, to buy our tickets, or eve know where the greyhound is. I can't not believe how rude the staff was. At all period. I would NOT recommend this motel to anyone. It's called Lataham. It's on 5th and 28th in lower Manhattan. We were forced to pack up and lug our 30 pound backpacks all across the freaking city trying to find a place with internet access.

That was really my only negatvie experience with NYC.

We got to explore the city quite well. We saw the 9/11 memorial and the Statue of Liberty yesterday. Post below are some pictures:

D.C. bound now.

New York City and the Outlets in Dunkin' Donuts

We arrived in New York City at 6:30am. We had a reservation at the Hosteling International hostel.

.... then we didn't.

We go up to the front desk and the reservation "didn't exist." They gave us a list of other hostels in the area and they are all full.

Every.
Single.
One.
Of.
Them.
Of course there were.. it's the freaking 4th of July.

We had limited internet access. We were trying to find motels through our phones in a random dunkin' donuts... on very small screens in 95 degree weather. SO MUCH SWEAT.

Jason spent 5 dollars on a Mountain Dew. He's insane. Water is so much better... speaking of water.. I only have a little bit of Oregon water left. :(

We walked all around the lower Manhattan area. We rode many subways. We hurdled our 30 pound backpacks up and down stairs. We got blisters. We battled the hobos and Jehovah's witnesses. We got the "I hate tourists" looks from almost everyone.

This was our rite of passage for this trip.

We found a motel.... pretty cheap for our location.

I haven't played chess with an old man yet and no pictures yet.

We will venture out  pretty soon.

And so... it begins.

The Night Before the Great Schism.....

Hi.

So basically tomorrow... I am boarding a plane, a large plane, that will arrive in New York City. It gets better... from New York City, I am traveling by Greyhound bus across the country.... with my essential possessions strapped to my back.

This blog will accompany me on my journey along with my good friend Jason Ganoe.

My first goal to the trip is to play chess with some random old man in Central Park. I shall keep you all updated.
